1 prob (lowering fps) with that, as it doesn't really seem to make much of a difference in space terms and it makes the game soooo laggy that it defeats the point of the whole recording as you keep getting killed, destroyed e.t.c.

I noticed that there were some programs that do this for you that were downloaded onto my comp along with fraps (folder HELP), anyway that they could be downloaded off the web? (like VirtualDub)

WinRAR is not very good at compressing; sure, it will be smaller in size. But something like 7zip has other compression methods that are way better.
An other possibility: put everything in Windows Movie Maker, export your film to lower quality/lower size.

but you still have the orginal movie just sitting there, and if you get rid of it the movie doesn't show up. defeats the point really =/

Wrong.

- You can save as a Movie Maker project (.mswmm): this loads your original video file and lets you edit (add titles, effects, cut copy paste) that video file. This indeed needs the original (big) video clip.

- You can then export that .mswmm project to a new video file (.avi / .mpg / ...): this allows you to choose quality and size settings. The resulting video (.avi) will be smaller and doesn't need the original (big) videoclip to be displayed.
